Chapter 1 (History) : Development began in 1995 under the BETA title “Super Mario Kart R", it is likely the “R” stood for "racing". The game was developed with other major titles
like Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (At the time known as Zelda 64). It was initially intended to be a launch title for the Nintendo 64, but required resources were used for the other two games,
causing a delay in the release. Super Mario Kart R was notable for its use of 3D computer graphics for track design, while characters and items remained as 2D sprites. This game introduced
several new features to the series, such as four-player multiplayer and more unique track designs due to the 3D capabilities. The game was shown off at the Nintendo SpaceWorld™ exhibit,
but not playable due to the severely unfinished state of the game and only in promotional footage. The game was supposed to feature the Feather item from Super Mario Kart
and Kamek as one of the eight playable characters, who was replaced with Donkey Kong in the final game.
Title Screen
The title screen went through some big changes in the development of Mario Kart 64. In the earliest title screen (I call it Beta 1 and Beta 2.) The characters appeared with different and more cartoony designs instead of the designs in the retail game,
and they are all facing the left instead of the right. The PUSH START BUTTON text was slightly different and less thick, along with the Nintendo copyright text. Biggest change of them all was definitely the logo,Instead of “Mario Kart 64"
the beta version displayed “Super Mario Kart R" This name was used before the game was finalized and released as “Mario Kart 64".
The next title screen only had 1 difference from the final
which was a Registered symbol near the logo instead of TM and it looks more saturated.
Player Select
You can see all of the early character sprites here. Wario is more orange instead of yellow, i can see why they changed it. Kamek (Or magikoopa for some guys) is here
and he looks as you would expect, though he is wearing darker blue then usual. They used the same Beta 1 title screen for the background but
green like the retail one. The grey borders showing their names are missing.
Random Differences
Did you know the item box in Mario Kart 64 was supposed to look black and more simple? i didnt either. In the 2nd image you can see this as they are in Banshee Boardwalk,
note the lack of a UI or HUD. You can also see the early item box in the 1st one as it is being gotten, exploding in a weird unwrapping way unlike the retail game.
A speech bubble appears when Mario or another character hits part of a track, probably removed as it is may be annoying or repetitive.
