Chapter 1 (History) : Development began in 1995 under the BETA title “Super Mario Kart R", it is likely the “R” stood for "racing". The game was developed with other major titles
like Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (At the time known as Zelda 64). It was initially intended to be a launch title for the Nintendo 64, but required resources were used for the other two games,
causing a delay in the release. Super Mario Kart R was notable for its use of 3D computer graphics for track design, while characters and items remained as 2D sprites. This game introduced
several new features to the series, such as four-player multiplayer and more unique track designs due to the 3D capabilities. The game was shown off at the Nintendo SpaceWorld™ exhibit,
but not playable due to the severely unfinished state of the game and only in promotional footage. The game was supposed to feature the Feather item from Super Mario Kart
and Kamek as one of the eight playable characters, who was replaced with Donkey Kong in the final game.

Title Screen
Title 1 Title 2
The title screen went through some big changes in the development of Mario Kart 64. In the earliest title screen, the characters appeared with different and more cartoony designs instead of the designs in the retail game,
and they are all facing the left instead of the right. The PUSH START BUTTON text was slightly different and less thick, along with the Nintendo copyright text. One of the most significant changes was the logo.
Instead of “Mario Kart 64", the beta version displayed “Super Mario Kart R" This name was used before the game was finalized and released as “Mario Kart 64". The next title screen
only had 1 significent difference from the final which was a Registered symbol near the logo instead of a trademark symbol.

Player Select
Menu
The Player Select went through some changes too! You can see everyone is facing straight instead of to the left like in the retail game. The characters obviously use the earlier models, but this is not a very notable change
compared to the obvious character difference... Kamek replacing Donkey Kong! As i mentioned earlier, he was meant to be playable but instead Nintendo went with Donkey Kong. How he would have played in contrast to
other characters is unknown. The background is the title screen but with the greenish overlay unlike the retail one with a completely new picture.
